Jorge Zarif takes Finn Silver Cup back to Brazil

Jorg Zarif (BRA) returns to Brazil with the Jorg Bruder Silver Cup, which was donated to the Finn Class by the Brazilian Olympic Committee in 2004. This is a well deserved victory by Zarif who didn't leave any doubt by winning the last race of the championship in totally different conditions. Jake Lilley (AUS) and Martin Robitaille (CAN) take Silver and Bronze, forming a tri-continental podium.

The morning start was again scheduled early at 8.00 am, with the race committee expecting the North wind. As usual you can not predict the unpredictable and when the sailors were sent to the racing area, the lake was glassy with not a breath of wind. After a short wait on the water the sailors went back to the club with now a small hope for a south wind which had never showed up during the week. After a couple of hours, the Bora filled the lake and provided a beautiful final race.

With a south wind around 8 to 12 knots, the racing was more tactical even if the left side along the beach was the favoured option of most of the fleet. Zarif followed his plan, starting at the left of the fleet and aiming straight for the left side. With a comfortable lead at the top mark, Zarif was never troubled and added a 6th victory to his impressive score.

In second place was Jakub Marciniak (POL) who places seventh overall and third Luzan Kirill (RUS) from Team Fantastica. Jake Lilley (AUS), fast again around the course conserved his second place after finishing in fifth in the last race. Martin Robitaille's last race didn't go according to plan. The defending World Champion couldn't make his way around the top mark, loosing many places. With no pumping allowed on the downwind, it was harder to catch up places and the Canadian crossed the line in 11 but kept third place overall and the Bronze.

The Finn Junior World Championship was a real display of athletism and endurance for these young sailors who raced nearly every day from 8am in a very fresh breeze. With four continents represented with the top four sailors and nine countries in the top ten, it was a well disputed regatta of the highest level. The future Finn stars were in Malcesine.

The 2013 Finn Silver Cup is the third Junior World for Jorge Zarif. In 2009, and at the young age of 17, he took the title in Balaton. In 2010, he finished fifth in a borrowed boat in San Francisco.

Second world title

The 2013 Finn Silver Cup is the third Junior World for Jorge Zarif. In 2009, and at the young age of 17, he took the title in Balaton. In 2010, he finished fifth in a borrowed boat in San Francisco.

This is the last year in the Juniors for Jorge who competed for Brazil in the last Olympic Games.

After some problems with his back in Palma, Zarif took a break and got back to top form to win the Junior World title.

"I have prepared well for this regatta. Because of my back problems, I took a physical coach and started training differently at the gym. I have also the great help of Bruno Prada as training partner and Rafa (Trujillo) as coach. We spent 10 days training in Malcesine with Ed Wright and I learned a lot."

"The fleet is changing a lot in the Juniors, the guys are all well trained and prepared for the event. They are also bigger than before."

After a rest in Brazil, Jorge will come back for the Gold Cup in Tallinn in August. "My objective there is to be in the top 15. In the last four years I haven't improved much but now with the help of Bruno and Rafa, I can see the progress. They are both World Champions and Olympic medallists, they are setting high objectives and it helps me to set highest goals as well. I think that it is what it takes to get there."

When asked about the future and the Games in Brazil he said "After last year's Olympic Games, Bruno asked me if my goal was to compete again in the Olympic Games or to go for a medal? He offered to train with him so that together we can achieve a medal, whoever is selected. I was very happy with his proposition and we both train well and progress together. I will worry about the Olympic selection in 2016."

Lilley strikes back but Zarif takes title at Finn Silver Cup

With one race left in the 2013 Finn Junior World Championship, Jorge Zarif (BRA) has sealed the title after a series of consistent races. On the penultimate day, Zarif scored a third and a second place and is now untouchable. Jake Lilley (AUS) struck back with two bullets to pass current World Champion Martin Robitaille (CAN) by a few points.

The last race in the championship will decide Silver and Bronze, and there are five sailors who can still stand on the podium.

As usual, racing started at 8am with a 18 knots breeze. And as usual, the pressure along the left side, down the cliff made choices predictable. The leaders gathered in the middle of the starting line and sailed upwind to the cliff. Peter McCoy (GBR) after a great start and a good speed up the beat, passed the top mark in first place, trailed by Lilley and Zarif. The Australian passed the British on the run and remained in the lead until the finish.

The start of the second race was evenly spread on the line but it took three attempts to have a clear start. The wind was stable and around 14 knots, providing another great race.

Lilley took a good start and was first at the cliff followed by most of the fleet. Closely followed by 2009 Junior World Champion Zarif, Lilley increased his lead steadily to win a second race.

Strong wind races and early starts have made for a testing regatta for the young sailors who are also enjoying a good rest each afternoon.

The last race will start at 8am on Friday and will decide Silver and Bronze.

Unless there is a major breach of rules, Zarif is sure to get Gold. This will be the second Junior World title for the Brazilian who had won the Silver Cup in 2009 on Balaton

2013 Finn Silver Cup
Jorg Bruder Trophy
Malcesine – Lake Garda – Italy
5th to 12th July 2013

Consistent Zarif extends lead at Finn Silver Cup

It was a day of snakes and ladders on Wednesday at the Finn Silver Cup at Malcesine, Italy. Racing started early again with the same solid north wind, but the difference was that light rain greeted the sailors. Temperatures remained warm so nobody was complaining.
The first race started with 15 knots of wind and the usual pin end favoured line and the race to the cliffs on the left was popular. So popular that several boats started early and three boats were scored as OCS, while one other disqualified for touching the pin mark. Martin Robitaille (CAN) and Peter McCoy (GBR) had the best starts and were first to the cliffs and first at mark 1. They sailed well to hold their positions and take first and second respectively, ahead of regatta leader Jorge Zarif (BRA).
Race 2 began much the usual way, but had a few twists and turns for the fleet than previously. After starting in 10 to 12 knots the wind died gradually on the first run and on the second beat temporarily stopped on the far left, before filling in again from the north. This was the first time the right side of the course paid all week, but the sailors that returned left further up the course gained the most. Zarif and Jakub Marciniak (POL) mastered the conditions best and moved through the fleet to finish first and second, with Robitaille in third.
Race 3 was the most difficult of all. The wind had dropped to under 5 knots for the start and a big left windshift made starting on starboard difficult. The boats that started at the committee boat had much more wind and took a big advantage immediately. This group of 12 boats managed to stay in pressure for the first beat and eventually the pressure returned evenly over the race course. >From this group Zarif, Ondrey Teply (CZE) and Arkadiy Kistanov (RUS), emerged to finish top three.
With a 3, 1, 1 Jorge Zarif has taken a solid 13 point lead with three races left in the championship. Martin Robitaille moved into second following a 1, 3, 5. He sits five points ahead of Jake Lilley (AUS) in third who scored a 6, 7, 7 today.
Two races are scheduled Thursday morning at 8am.

2013 Finn Silver Cup
Jorg Bruder Trophy
Malcesine – Lake Garda – Italy
5th to 12th of July 2013

Double win puts Zarif on top at Finn Silver Cup

Three more great races on Tuesday 9 July in a fresh early morning breeze gave the lead of the 2013 Finn Junior World Championship to 2012 Olympian from Brazil, Jorge Zarif.

The day belonged to the early risers on Lake Garda with the best wind conditions encountered in the day's first hours. At 7.00 am the boat park was already buzzing with sailors, coaches and race committee getting ready for the third day of racing. When the gun for race 3 went at 8.00 am the wind was as strong as ever with a 24 knots northerly breeze and waves.

With free pumping on the downwind legs and a triangle course, the morning was survival of the fittest. Racing was more physical than tactical with the course a one way track close to the cliff. The fastest sailors secured a place at the top and often despite an average start. In the day's first race, regatta leaders Jorge Zarif (BRA) and Jake Lilley (AUS) didn't impress at the start: the Brazilian started again in the third row while the Australian touched the pin end mark. Nevertheless, the pair showed their great speed to gain some ground on their rivals. It was not enough though to catch up with current Junior World Champion Martin Robitaille (CAN) who took an early lead, comfortable and untouchable in the strong breeze, stretching his tall body to make the most of the upwind legs. Lilley and Zarif finished second and third behind the Canadian.

The Brazilian, on fire in the breeze, took a good start in the two last races to take the lead of the championship. Zarif took the bullet in race 4 after a dual with the Australian. In the last race Lilley crossed the line just ahead of the Brazilian, however, an earlier starboard incident between the two was settled in the Jury room with a disqualification for Lilley and another race win for Zarif.

After five races, the sailors can now discard their worst score. 2009 Junior World Champion Jorg Zarif takes the lead of the regatta from Anders Pedersen (NOR) who is in third behind the Australian Jake Lilley. Martin Robitaille is in fourth position on equal points with Peter McCoy (GBR).

After some well deserved pasta offered by the Yacht Club, and truly enjoyed by all, the sailors could take the day off at 1pm, ready for another early start scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday 10 July.

Anders Pedersen leads after day one at Finn Silver Cup

A beautiful breeze welcomed the sailors at Fraglia Vela Malcesine for two early morning races on Monday 8 July for the second day of the Finn Silver Cup. Eager to start their World Championship, after Sunday's racing was cancelled, the young Finn sailors were on the water and ready at 7.30am.
The northerly breeze had reached 14 knots when the start of the first race was given at 8am. The course and the building wind was favouring the left side of the lake with a clear start at the crowded pin end.
The lead was quickly taken by Norwegian Anders Pedersen who had seen his season début cut short with illness while racing in Palma. Pedersen seem to have fully recovered from a long rest and was hard to catch on the water today. However Brazil's youngest Finn Olympian Jorg Zarif didn't leave any opportunity unturned and finally stole the lead on the last run. Not far behind, Jake Lilley (AUS), 2011 Junior World Champion Arkadiy Kistanov (RUS) and Peter McCoy enjoyed the free pumping. McCoy (GBR) who was among the leaders at the first top mark sailed the wrong course around the gybe mark, but didn't lose any positions, catching up on the downwind legs. Defending Champion Martin Robitaille (CAN) didn't race at his best, missing the pressure under the cliffs but still finished in seventh place.
The second race had less wind and the Oscar flag was removed. Australian Jake Lilley secured a good start down from the committee boat to lead the fleet until the last run where Pedersen took his revenge from the first race and the bullet. Lilley settled for second in front of a very consistent Kistanov. Zarif who had totally missed the start in third row, caught up steadily to finish fourth.
At 10.30 all sailors were back ashore for some rest and breakfast.
With racing cancelled on Sunday, the first day of the regatta, through lack of wind, a third race was planned in the afternoon. But playing catch up wasn't easy and the capricious southerly breeze came at 1pm and disappeared as quickly. After waiting on the water the sailors came back to the club but the wind never stabilised on the lake, so it will be another early start at 8am on Tuesday.
After two races Anders Pedersen from Norway is leading with Jorge Zarif second on equal points with World # 8 Jake Lilley (AUS).

2013 Finn Silver Cup
Jorg Bruder Trophy
Malcesine – Lake Garda – Italy
5th to 12th of July 2013

Finn Silver Cup opened at Malcesine

The 2013 Finn Silver Cup, the Junior World Championship for the Finn is set to start in Malcesine, Italy. Sailors from 14 countries and four continents will fight for the title won last year by Canadian Martin Robitaille.
Robitaille (CAN) is back to defend his title and will be among the favorites along with past Junior World Champions Arcadiy Kistanov (RUS) and Jorge Zarif (BRA). Class newcomer from Australia Jake Lilley, who is placed 8th in the ISAF World ranking, or Dimitar Vangelov (BUL), second in the Junior European last year, also stand good chances.
The youngest contenders are Artur Kotlyarov from Russia and Italian Matteo Savio. While 17 years old Savio will race his first Silver Cup, it will be the third for Kotlyarov who started racing in the Finn at age 15 in the 2011 Finn Silver Cup in Moscow.
The event started with the traditional IFA clinic organised by IFA coach Paul Mckenzie. During five days sailors took part in the free training promoted by the Finn class to give further help to sailors with no coach. The clinic has particularly attracted sailors from Russia, Bulgaria, and Germany.
With Northern Europe bringing a good fleet of Junior Finn sailors with Poland, Russia, Germany, Norway, Holland and Great Britain, other continents being represented by Canada, Brazil and Australia.
All the flags were raised during the opening ceremony in the presence of the Mayor of Malcesine and the club Chairman.
Racing will start on Sunday 7th of July with 11 races scheduled up to Saturday 12th.
